"Tony"
****UPDATE**** Tony passed on May 25, 2024. We will keep his page up until the next horse comes along!
Tony was taken out of Kill pen in 2006 on a whim following the death of one of our older horses, Ben. He was extremely thin, weak and full of parasites. It took months to put weight on him and get his medical needs under control, but he finally filled out and began showing his true personality! During his rehabilitation process, we discovered that he was actually twenty years old and had a condition known as Equine Odotoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis that made it difficult for him to eat normally.
Tony is a Thoroughbred with a lip tattoo that indicates the year of his birth. Unfortunately, the tattoo had faded by the time we got him and we were only able to read the first part of it. While we don’t know exactly who he was in his past life, we do know that he is very, very old for a horse! He has spent the majority of his time just enjoying a peaceful retirement here at home, and was only ever ridden on a few occasions back in his early days with us. It was obvious that at one point he had been very well trained, as he could jump just about anything, execute flying changes, cross water and respond to a multitude of cues.
To this day, he is still sensitive and energetic! Despite his special needs and advanced age, he remains active and enjoys lots of time outdoors in the big pasture with his herd! We are fortunate that he does not require any sort of pain management or special medications at this time. His receives routine bloodwork and frequent vet checks to monitor his weight and nutritional status as well as barefoot trimming from the farrier.
