Horse Grazing

Poco

Poco was found at an auction in 2007 after his owner had passed away and he was discarded by the family members. It was clear that someone had loved the little horse as a pet at one point, but his plain, stumpy appearance and lack of training made him somewhat undesirable at the sale barn. We felt that he would be a perfect addition to our herd and paid bottom dollar to take him home with us. His story highlights the importance of pet owners making a plan for their animals in the event of a tragedy, as many beloved creatures end up becoming homeless in this way.

At the time of his sale, he did have papers indicating that he was a purebred Quarter Horse; a descendent of the famous Poco Bueno! Despite his pedigree, he lacks the shine and refinement that many people would expect to find in such a horse, so his chances of finding a good home were pretty low. He tends to put on weight easily and has a very scrappy mane and tail, but his health has been stable and he currently has no serious medical conditions!

Poco lives a very laid-back lifestyle; he was ridden lightly on trails from 2007 until 2021, when he was completely retired. He has always enjoyed a low-stress environment and plenty of free time out on pasture! Today he is barefoot with nothing at all to worry about! He requires regular visits with the farrier to trim his hooves as well as the usual visits with the vet to monitor his teeth and other age-related conditions.

The biggest challenge with Poco is keeping him from gaining too much weight in the summer! He has recently been diagnosed with Uveitis, which is an inflammatory condition of the eye, allergies and arthritis. Additionally, his teeth are beginning to fail due to his age and he requires senior mash as the basis of his diet. He is currently on Hydroxyzine for allergies and Equioxx for his arthritis.
